Argentina scored twice in the closing minutes to defeat England 2-1 in a dramatic FIFA World Cup semi-final in Atlanta, Georgia, securing a place in the tournament final after Lionel Messi inspired a remarkable comeback with two decisive assists.

The highly anticipated clash at Atlanta Stadium in the United States was tightly contested for long periods, with both sides showing defensive discipline and limiting clear-cut chances during a goalless first half.

England came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval but were unable to convert their opportunities, while disciplinary tensions surfaced as midfielder Elliot Anderson and Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez were both cautioned for late challenges.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon calmly finished after being set up by Morgan Rogers, giving England a deserved lead and raising hopes of a first World Cup final appearance in decades.

Argentina, however, responded by increasing their attacking intensity. Coach Lionel Scaloni made a series of substitutions, introducing fresh legs and greater attacking threat as England sought to protect their advantage.

The pressure paid off in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández finished confidently after a precise pass from Messi, drawing Argentina level and shifting momentum decisively in the South Americans’ favour.

With extra time appearing inevitable, Argentina struck again deep into stoppage time. Substitute Lautaro Martínez converted another Messi assist in the 90+2nd minute, completing a stunning turnaround and sparking celebrations among Argentine players and supporters.

England pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, making attacking substitutions in the dying moments, but Argentina’s defence held firm to secure victory and book a place in the final.

Messi once again demonstrated his enduring influence on the global stage, providing both assists and orchestrating Argentina’s comeback in a performance that underlined his importance to the reigning world champions.

For England, the defeat was a painful end to a campaign that had appeared destined for a place in the final after Gordon’s second-half opener. Despite a disciplined display for much of the match, the Three Lions were unable to withstand Argentina’s late surge.

The result sends Argentina into another FIFA World Cup final, reinforcing the country’s status as one of international football’s dominant forces. England, meanwhile, must regroup ahead of the third-place play-off after seeing their title hopes dashed in dramatic fashion.
