Nigerian Army Expands Aviation Operations Against Terrorist Threats

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed Army Aviation personnel to intensify air operations against terrorists and bandits while commissioning new welfare facilities in Abuja, underscoring the military’s effort to strengthen operational effectiveness and combat readiness.

Shaibu gave the directive during the inauguration of the Coordinator’s Residence for the Nigerian Army Aviation Command and newly completed accommodation for officers and soldiers at the Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Giri, Abuja.

Addressing personnel of the Nigerian Army Aviation Command, the Army Chief described military aviation as a critical element of modern warfare, particularly in counter-insurgency and counterterrorism operations.

He said the Aviation Command plays a vital role in intelligence gathering, surveillance, troop deployment, medical evacuation and precision strikes against armed groups operating in different parts of the country.

Shaibu urged personnel to maximise available aviation assets to maintain air superiority and restrict the movement of criminal groups.

He said sustained dominance of the airspace remains essential to weakening terrorist networks, disrupting bandit activities and improving security in affected regions.

Welfare Investment Linked to Operational Readiness

The Army Chief linked the newly commissioned accommodation facilities to the Nigerian Army’s Soldier-First philosophy, which prioritises personnel welfare as a foundation for operational success.

According to him, improved living conditions contribute directly to morale, professional performance and mission effectiveness.

He challenged Army Aviation personnel to match the investment in welfare and infrastructure with higher levels of professionalism and stronger operational results across all theatres of deployment.

The Army Headquarters also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the Aviation Command through continued investment in modern equipment, infrastructure and operational capabilities.

Shaibu commended the Directorate of Procurement for completing the housing project on schedule, describing it as another milestone in the Army’s broader personnel welfare programme.

Aviation Command’s Growing Security Role

Nigeria continues to face security challenges from insurgent groups, bandit networks and other armed criminal organisations in several regions. Military aviation has increasingly become a key component of efforts to improve surveillance, mobility and rapid response capabilities.

Air assets support ground troops by providing real-time intelligence, transporting personnel and equipment, evacuating casualties and conducting targeted operations against hostile groups.

The Nigerian Army has expanded investment in aviation capabilities in recent years as part of wider military modernisation efforts aimed at addressing evolving security threats.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Coordinator of the Nigerian Army Aviation Command, Brigadier General Al-Amin Ibrahim, thanked the Chief of Army Staff for his leadership and continued commitment to personnel welfare.

He said the newly completed facilities reflect deliberate efforts to strengthen Army Aviation while advancing the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a professional, welfare-driven and combat-ready force.

Ibrahim added that the investment would support the command’s ability to respond effectively to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges while enhancing the welfare and productivity of personnel.

The latest infrastructure development forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to balance operational demands with personnel welfare as it seeks to strengthen its capacity to address complex security threats across the country.
