The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria Fmbn has declared that it will launch its Diaspora National Housing Fund (NHF) Mortgage Loan in London, United Kingdom, on August 7, 2026.
The initiative aims to expand affordable housing finance for eligible Nigerians living overseas while strengthening their investment and long-term ties to the country.

FMBN Managing Director and Chief Executive, Shehu Usman Osidi, announced the launch during the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration in Abuja.

He said the mortgage product would provide Nigerians abroad with a safe, transparent and sustainable route to homeownership in Nigeria.
Osidi described the launch as a major step towards widening access to housing finance for Nigerians regardless of where they live.

He said it fulfilled the bank’s commitment to providing a trusted platform through which citizens overseas could confidently pursue their goal of owning homes in Nigeria.

He added that the scheme would allow eligible Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in property, build long-term wealth, prepare for retirement in Nigeria and support the growth of the country’s housing sector.

“Beyond homeownership, we expect the initiative to stimulate housing construction, create employment, deepen mortgage penetration, promote greater formalisation of housing transactions, strengthen confidence in the Nigerian mortgage system and facilitate increased diaspora investment in the Nigerian economy,” Osidi said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to drawing on the expertise and resources of Nigerians abroad to accelerate national development.

The President said Nigeria continued to face challenges including inadequate healthcare infrastructure, shortages of skilled medical personnel, limited research and innovation, gaps in specialised care and policy inconsistency.
However, he said these obstacles could be overcome through stronger collaboration with the Nigerian diaspora.

“With the collective strength of our diaspora, we can transform them into opportunities,” he said.

Tinubu said the Federal Government would institutionalise the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative, expand diaspora medical missions, strengthen partnerships between Nigerian teaching hospitals and overseas professionals, increase the use of telemedicine, encourage diaspora-led investment in hospitals and research centres, and introduce incentives for medical professionals abroad who choose to return to practise or invest in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, welcomed FMBN’s forthcoming mortgage launch. She described it as an important step towards making affordable homeownership more accessible to Nigerians living abroad.

Dabiri-Erewa also highlighted NiDCOM’s efforts to protect the welfare of Nigerians overseas, support humanitarian interventions, promote diaspora investment and remittances, and advance initiatives including the proposed Diaspora Investment Fund, the National Diaspora Health Corps and advocacy for diaspora voting.

The event, themed “Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development,” brought together senior government officials, lawmakers, healthcare leaders and Nigerian professionals from across the world.

Participants included representatives of the Senate and House Committees on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and Nigerian Medical Association President Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti.
