Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya has been elected the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), securing 12,317 votes, or 47.18% of ballots cast, in an election that ushers in new leadership for one of Africa’s largest professional legal bodies.

The result was announced on July 19 by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Aham Ejelam, SAN, following the conclusion of voting and collation of results.

Badejo-Okusanya defeated fellow Senior Advocates of Nigeria Lateef Akangbe, who received 7,934 votes, and Olumuyiwa Akinboro, who secured 5,855 votes, to emerge as the association’s 33rd president.

Her election places her at the helm of an organisation that represents thousands of legal practitioners and plays a significant role in shaping debates on the rule of law, judicial reform, constitutional governance and human rights in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.

The election also produced a new team of national officers. Oghenero Okoro was elected First Vice President with 11,024 votes, while Afam Okeke won the position of General Secretary with 8,478 votes. Aghogho Gladys secured the office of Assistant General Secretary with 14,312 votes, and Chinelo Audrey Ofoegbunam was elected Welfare Secretary with 14,911 votes.
